WARNING: This first post is largely about the location of the pelvic floor. Rather than be shy and not give you all the full scoop, I thought no way, it wouldn't do the pelvic floor justice! So go ahead and wash your hands because we're going to get in there.
You can think of your pelvic floor as the shape of a diamond. So let's find our diamond! <> The top part of the diamond is your pubic bone...begin to tip toe your fingers south of your navel until you feel bone. Might be a bit more of a travel than you imagine... Find it? Lets call this North. The Southern tip of the diamond is a little harder to find. What we will be touching is our tail bone aka the coccyx. You can start the journey just above your booty crack, you may need to press down a bit. Go straight down the crack just an inch or so and explore side to side. The coccyx is the shape of a tiny upside down triangle. You might even find that its shifted to a side or pointed towards the front of your body. Could be the side effect of an injury or just more information/awareness about you :) Last, but not least are the 2 sit bones that make up the East and West or side corners of the diamond. Take your hand underneath your glutes and those two bony protuberances are your sit bones. That is your diamond.
So now that we've finished the nitty gritty, why is this area so important? This picture above demonstrates so perfectly how these muscles are a hammock for what's inside them; being the bladder, bowel as well as the uterus for women, then imagine all of our organs stacked on top. Major stuff! The strength, or tonicity rather, is the health of our continence (or incontinence), orgasm (sexual pleasure) and posture! This area is the base of your core.
Your pelvic floor:
Hold/release all your "business" when its convenient!
Stabilize your spine, so less pain in the low back and pelvic region
Men: erection and ejaculation
Women: sexual pleasure, orgasm and arousal
If you find that some of these characteristics are difficult, its possible that your pelvic floor may need a little extra love. Pregnancy, labor, obesity and aging effect the tonicity of the pelvic floor as well.

What! Heavy little tidbit I know, but if we can gain awareness now, think about all the great sex , length in your spine, and added security in your self for years to come.
